Another Ricky Williams failed drug test...
The big news today is that Ricky Williams tested positive for marijuana back in April and that he won't be allowed to apply for reinstatement until September. This according to Espn's Chris Mortensen.
Williams missed all of last season as he was suspended for violating the substance abuse policy and he was eligible for reinstatement this month. A decision was expected to be made by next week regarding his future in the league, but doctors recommended to wait 'till September.
Falling off the wagon is part of rehab," a source said. "Based on the medical evidence in Ricky's case, the doctors say it's too early to come back. He had the positive test last month. Remember, he's been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder -- that's a real disease and a good percentage of those folks self-medicate with substances like marijuana, often at the moment they are about to have a high level of social interaction.
It's sad to see how this guy's career has unfolded because he had the potential to be one of the best backs of our time. I had hoped that he could get back this year and contribute for Miami but I'm not sure now if that will happen.
I'm not sure how commissioner Goodell is going to deal with this because he's been doing his best to clean up the league's image and it does not work well in Ricky's favor that he failed yet another test. But on the other hand, he hasn't committed any crimes, he hasn't been to jail and he hasn't hurt anybody. He's a guy with an illness and I guess this was his way of trying to deal with it. You can argue if it was justifiable or not, but those just the facts..
So yeah, I hope he gets another chance somehow but if not, I wouldn't be surprised. Even if he's allowed back, chances are big that Miami will trade him and that suddenly makes that Lorenzo Booker pick in the draft look so much better.
