Penny and Shaq reunite in South Florida
But as players of the Miami Heat. The Heat signed Penny Hardaway yesterday, meaning that the former Orlando Magic teammates are together again, ironically in South Florida.
Oh man, where to begin. I guess we'll begin in 1995. I don't think I'll ever experience a year in sports like '95 again. The Braves won the World Series, Ajax (Dutch Soccer) were European and World Champions, Dan Marino was still playing in Miami and the Orlando Magic were building a dynasty around Shaq and Penny. There were commercials with 'lil Penny and their intro looked something like this. Things just couldn't get any better and that's when something happened. A painful set of events that have left me bleeding internally ever since.
Orlando got swept in the Finals by Houston but you had a feeling that they were going to be back. They were the most exciting team in the league, had two of the best players and this was just the beginning of the dynasty. But that wasn't the case. That sweep started a decline from which they never got out of.
Nick Anderson's free throw choke in game one had a bigger effect mentally on him than we could have imagined at the time. And Jordan was back in full force the next year, sweeping Orlando in the Eastern Conference Finals and that was it. Shaq wasn't happy, his contract was up and L.A. flashed the big dollars and he was a Laker before I could finish wiping my tears away. And so the fork was stuck in my throat and the downfall continued.
Shaq has had plenty of success since, winning titles in L.A. and Miami along with sidekicks Kobe and Wade. For Penny and the Magic things didn't turn out so well. Hardaway's career fizzled due to injuries and the Magic have been nowhere since '96.
And now these two men are together again but both on the downside of their careers. Penny hasn't even played a game since 2005 and Shaq has also struggled with injuries. The funny part is that I'll take Orlando's roster over Miami's roster right now. Give me Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis over Shaq, what's left of Penny and an injured Dwayne Wade any day.
So while I don't expect Miami to make it back to the top with this signing, the Nostalgia that they'll give me will make me vomit on a daily basis.
